How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

So, how often do you need to check your transmission fluid? Like other fluids in your vehicle, regularly checking it will ensure you don’t run into any issues during your Springhill drives. The recommended inspection interval for your transmission fluid can vary depending on your exact model but the general rule of thumb is to check it every once a month or so. You can also schedule a service appointment and our service technicians can check your transmission fluid for you at your next service.

Steps On How To Check Your Transmission Fluid

Now that we’ve answered, “How often do you check your transmission fluid?” let’s go over the steps on checking your transmission fluid in your own Olathe garage. Before we start though, we want to remind you that some vehicles have a sealed transmission.

This means that you won’t be able to check the fluid yourself and you’ll have to bring it to a service center. If you have a sealed transmission, we don’t recommend that you attempt to check the fluid on your own as you could damage your vehicle. With that out of the way, here’s how to check the transmission fluid if your vehicle doesn’t have a sealed transmission:

  1. Ensure your vehicle is at optimal operating temperatures.
  2. Turn your vehicle off and locate the transmission fluid dipstick. In most vehicles, the dipstick is located next to the oil dipstick. You can reference your owner’s manual if you have trouble locating the transmission fluid dipstick.
  3. Remove the dipstick and inspect the fluid. In most vehicles, the fluid should be clear with a slightly pink hue. If you notice the color is different or it has a burnt smell, you may want to visit a service center immediately.
  4. Clean off the dipstick and reinsert it back into the tube. Now remove the transmission fluid dipstick once more and inspect the fluid level. If you’re low on fluid, consider working with a service center to ensure that it’s back at the proper level.
