How to Calculate Gas Mileage

Gas pumps in a row

All new vehicles for sale at Olathe Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram and elsewhere in the United States are given EPA-estimated gas mileage estimates. But as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes in its disclaimers when rating vehicles, actual mileage may differ from those figures. So, if you’re looking for your actual gas mileage on Overland Park or Gardner streets, this guide on how to calculate gas mileage is for you. Read on to learn more, otherwise don’t hesitate to contact us at any point in time with additional questions!

What is Good Gas Mileage?

The word “good” has many different interpretations when you apply it to gas mileage. What’s considered “good” gas mileage for someone stepping down from a large pickup truck, for instance, may be very different from what’s considered “good” gas mileage from someone who’s always driven a hybrid-electric car. If you’re shopping for an SUV, you may also have a different perception of what good gas mileage is than someone who’s shopping for a small car.

If you’re in the market to buy or lease a new vehicle in Olathe, it’s important to temper your expectations for gas mileage with what the average ratings are in the segment you’re shopping for. Meanwhile, if you’re looking to calculate gas mileage you’re experiencing already in your current car, then the below steps are for you to follow.

Gas Mileage Calculator

Want to learn how to calculate your vehicle’s gas mileage quickly and easily? Here’s how:

  • Top off your gas tank.
  • Reset your trip odometer. Alternatively, record the exact mileage after refilling.
  • Find out how much gasoline, in gallons, your tank holds by checking your vehicle’s owner’s manual or doing research on the web. Call 913-971-0182 if in doubt.
  • Drive your car as you would normally. You want your estimates to be as reflective as possible of your normal habits for increased accuracy.
  • Refill your tank and record your mileage. If you wait longer to refill, your calculation will be more accurate as it will be based on a more balanced mix of driving conditions.
  • The easiest way to calculate your gas mileage is to simply divide the number of miles travelled by the number of gallons of gas your vehicle took to refill.
  • If you forget to check how many gallons you filled up your car at the pump on on your gas receipt, you can go by where your tank was when you refilled (i.e. ¼, ½, or ¾) and then divide out your total tank capacity accordingly to come to the number of gallons refilled. Then, divide miles driven by that approximation. This will be less accurate, but works in a pinch.
