Dodge is one of America’s oldest car brands, founded in the year 1900. It actually wasn’t until 1914 that Dodge built their first trucks, although these have become a signature part of the Dodge lineup. RAM was originally a name for a light-duty Dodge pickup that became very popular. The name also appeared on other vehicles in the Dodge lineup, like the Ramcharger SUV and Dodge RAM Van.
So, when did Dodge and RAM split? Chrysler bought Dodge in 1981. They kept a lot of Dodge’s most popular models, including their trucks, which were then labeled “Dodge RAM” trucks and stayed that way up to 2009. While Chrysler is still the company who owns RAM and Dodge, they restructured the brand and split Dodge and RAM into two distinct vehicle lineups after 2009.
